Hexbloom is a tactical, solarpunk roguelite strategy game where you step into the role of a restoration crew trying to heal a barren world, one hex at a time.

Compete against a rival crew in a tense, turn-based battle of "I split, you choose" mechanics, resource majorities, and strategic placement. Will your greenhouse thrive, or will weeds overtake your efforts?


🌱 Core Gameplay

Each "Bloom" (round), both players draw hexes from a shared Seed Pouch containing three crucial resources: Timber, Clay, and Grain.

Every turn, you must carefully use all four of your actions:

  • Preserve (1): Stash a hex in secret for the end of the round.
  • Recycle (2): Return two hexes to the pouch to clean up your hand.
  • Gift (3): Offer three hexes to your rival—they pick one, you keep the rest.
  • Split (4): Divide four hexes into two pairs. Your rival chooses a pair, and you get what's left.

🗺️ Tactical Placement & Synergy

After dividing the resources, both crews simultaneously plant their hexes onto the board. Connect your tiles strategically to claim majority control over the three resource types.

  • Fortify: Place resources on their matching terrain (Timber on Forest, Clay on Quarry, Grain on Fertile soil) to double their points!
  • Compost: Sacrifice your Grain to compost and claim distant tiles, upgrading barren lands into fertile ground and expanding your Greenhouse's influence ring.

🏆 The Season Map

Progress through a roguelite Season Map filled with challenging encounters. Win a Bloom to earn rare Seedlings and add them to your pouch. Lose, and your pouch will slowly fill with useless Weeds. You only have 3 lives—plan your path carefully, rest when needed, and outgrow the competition!


🛠️ Development & Roadmap

Hexbloom is an experimental project heavily assisted by AI tools (including custom persona debates for game design and procedural generation tools) built to merge board game-like tactics with video game progression.

What We've Built So Far (v0.01 - Genesis):

  • Full 3D isometric hexagonal rendering with custom-generated graphic assets using the Nano Banana 2 model.
  • Core game loop: Resource generation, hotseat multiplayer, and a challenging PvE Bot opponent calculating strategic "I split, you choose" moves.
  • Complete game logic implementation: Hand management, tactical hex placement, adjacency rules, and victory condition evaluation.
  • Roguelite meta-layer: Branching Season Map with rest actions, life tracking, and deck-building elements (Seed Pouch evolution).

What's Coming Next (Upcoming Updates):

  • Seedlings Wildcard System (WIP): Transforming "Seedlings" from just points into active wildcards that adapt to whatever terrain they are planted on.
  • Enhanced Compost UI: Overhauling the sacrifice mechanic into a smooth, 2-step click-and-claim interface directly on the 3D board.
  • Advanced Terrain Generation: Scrapping static map layouts in favor of procedural, noise-based hex grids for endless replayability.
  • Boss Encounters: Unique final map nodes with special rules, obstacles, or hyper-aggressive rival bot behavior.
  • Physics-Based Worker Placement: Moving toward v0.02 by adding physical interaction rules for placing crews on the grid.
